5 - The Day of the Surgery

    Emotional tension is intense on the day before and on the day of surgery.  When requested a tranquilizer is prescribed for the night before surgery.  Eight hours of fasting is a necessity before any kind of major surgery with a general anesthetic or local.  local anesthetics and without hospitalization, food and liquid For micro surgeries with intake is permitted as general routine.  

hygiene is important on the eve.  The patient must make sure that the area which is to be operated on must be completely scrubbed for ten minutes.  On the morning of surgery, repeat the same procedure in that way eliminating skin bacteria as much as possible, facilitating post-surgery. 

   Patient must check into hospital one hour before surgery.  The patient changes his clothing for a surgical gown and stays in the room calmly relaxed for surgery.

      No jewelry or objects of value should be taken to the hospital.  Clothing should be loose, light and easy to put on so arms do not have to be raised.  Ideally clothes with front buttoning are practical after surgery for leaving the hospital. 

   On wearing make-up to the hospital, it should be very light or preferably none, specially on facial operations.

     No shaving of hairs must be done before surgery.  When necessary, shaving is done by the surgical center with the patient already anaesthetized.

     It is important the company of a relative, it is mandatory with minor.  The relative can be substituted by a friend.  It is important that this companion is a calm and well balanced individual and well informed of the surgery about to be performed.  Usually the companion is as nervous as the patient. 

Once the patient is in the room with his surgical gown on, he receives a visit from the surgeon who will give him a general check-up and will mark with special pens the are to be operated.  The anesthetists also visits the patient and checks all data that he judges convenient, clarifies anesthetic procedures and the prescribes the drugs to be used that will start the anesthetic procedure.  The patient is then taken to the operating room.
